He was ever the guardian and wise leader never veering from his role as central tale teller and unifier of the disparate angles of the story. His voice streamed even through the long narrative of the first Act and the exposition of the last one, where he thoughtfully accepted his own weaknesses viz \u2013 a \u2013 viz sending Parsifal away, and then moved into the compassion with which he brought him back into the Brotherhood. <\/p>\n<p>But, most notable were his interactions with Parsifal, the intimacy he brought to their dialogues, the depths of it, the caring. When Parsifal leaned back into the arms of the embracing Gurnemanz, we fell back ourselves, cared for; when he covered Parsifal\u2019s eyes, we too felt protected,  It was eloquent.<\/p>\n<p>Then too, in the final act, when he took his place at the feet of the new leader of the Brotherhood, we were in the arms of someone with absolute respect and dignity. That Pape could sing all this let alone with singular beauty, his voice articulating one fragment of information after another, and never losing its threads, was thrilling, even as it was long.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/operawire.com\/bayerische-staatsoper-2017-18-review-parsifal\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OperaWire<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ren\u00e9 Pape singt einen lyrischen Gurnemanz. Die Stimme ist weich, edel timbriert, wenig metallisch, hat wenig von Salminens granteliger Wucht. Pape singt rhetorisch sorgf\u00e4ltig, durchsetzt den von Erinnerungen gepr\u00e4gten Monolog des ersten Aufzugs mit ariosen Aufschw\u00fcngen. Das Stimmmaterial ist immer noch superb. Sch\u00f6n das Legato, das Pape zwischen energischer Deklamation einerseits und einem dem Sprechen angen\u00e4herten Parlando andererseits entfaltet. Der Vortrag ist lebendig und biegsam, wird vollkommen aus dem B\u00fchnenmoment heraus gesungen. Nichts ist da nur abgesungen. M\u00e4nnlich-energische Akzente gliedern die Phrasen (des Grales Wunderkr\u00e4fte st\u00e4rken).
