‘When I was child in Dresden,” says René Pape, “I used to play in the ruins of the Semper Oper,” the city’s 19th-century opera house, bombed by the Allies during World War II. “But I came to opera itself much later. My first great musical loves were Bach and Heinrich Schütz.”
