René Pape’s riveting Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust from the Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD production is now available on DVD. Tony Award winning stage director Desmond McAnuff has set the production in the early 20th Century, with Faust portrayed as an atomic scientist. Jonas Kaufmann is Faust, with Marina Poplavskaya in the role of the innocent Marguerite. The Metropolitan Opera’s Live in HD production of Wagner’s Parsifal also brings together an outstanding cast, with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role.
Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times writes:
“the great bass René Pape is the veteran knight Gurnemanz, a role he owns.”
This 2013 production was staged by acclaimed French Canadian director François Girard in his Met debut, with Daniele Gatti conducting Wagner’s powerful and complex score.
