‘Tristan und Isolde’ in Bayreuth
10 Jul 2017
Mr. Pape returns to the Bayreuth Opera Festival this summer for the first time in twenty years, to sing the role of King Marke in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. The show opens on Wednesday, July 26, and is followed by five additional performances on August 2, 6, 12, 16 & 20. Conducted by Christian Thielemann, Mr. Pape is joined on stage by Stephen Gould as Tristan, Petra Lang singing Isolde, Iain Paterson as Kurwenal, Christa Meyer as Brangäne, and Raimond Nolte who sings Melot. Pape has performed King Marke multiple times throughout his career, including at The Metropolitan Opera, where Opera News lauded his portrayal as having “melancholy dignity and sumptuously textured bass.” He also performed the role earlier this season in Saint Petersburg, Russia, under the baton of Valery Gergiev.
