Season opening concerts and Banquo in Berlin
22 Apr 2019
With the title “Babi Jar”, Dmitri Shostakovich’s 13th Symphony sets a musical monument to a massacre of the Second World War, which up to the 1960s was concealed not only by the Germans but also by the Soviets. René Pape sings the solo part in this work on May 9, for the season opening concert in Ludwigsburg.
Following this performance, he stars in another opening concert, on May 16, at the Dresdner Musikfestspiele. With songs by Franz Schubert, the celebrated bass will immerse himself in the romantic life of the soul. The overture to Carl Maria von Weber’s opera “Euryanthe” will precede them.
Finally, on May 23, 26 and 30, Mr. Pape joins the cast of Verdi’s Macbeth at the Staatsoper Berlin, where he sings the role of Banquo with Plácido Domingo in the title role and Ekaterina Semenchuk as Lady Macbeth.
