15 Nov 2016
15 November 2016 — René Pape sings King Philip II, a signature role, in Verdi’s Don Carlo this winter. Mr. Pape takes the stage at the Opernhaus Zurich for performances on November 27 and December 1, 4, 7 & 10, with a cast that includes Ramon Vargas in the title role, Anja Harteros as Elisabetta, Peter Mattei as Rodrigo, and Marina Prudenskaya sings Princess Eboli.
His recent portrayal of the conflicted monarch at San Francisco Opera garnered rave reviews from audiences and critics alike:
“The standout was René Pape’s riveting King Philip II, the embodiment of power until he crumbled in his late-night reflection that his wife doesn’t love him.” (Wall Street Journal)
